Every word of Mikel’s post-Man Utd press report | Press conference | News

After watching us record our fourth win in a row with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta took his usual questions from the media in his post-match press conference.

He was asked about our dominance in set pieces, injuries, recovery from recent setbacks and much more.

Here’s everything he had to say:

about performance:
Very happy. It is a very special evening celebrating 100 games in this incredible stadium against an opponent with such a long history between the clubs and teams. The way we played, especially after tweaking a few things in the second half, and how dominant we were, how convincing we were and apart from David’s save from a very sloppy throw-in, we didn’t really concede, so a lot of positive things.

about our success after standard situations:
We need that. I think we want to be very dangerous and very effective in every aspect and on every side of the game. We worked on all of this. Today we couldn’t score from the game like we did against West Ham, against Sporting, so the team really believes that from every perspective we have the mentality to threaten the opponent and try to score. Today there were two standard situations, we constantly had dangerous corners.

on the team’s position in the table:
We don’t think about where we stand at half-time. I think we have to mind our own business, try to perform the way we are right now and find ways to win the game. I think the team deserved another win today, which is very good, and we can’t control what the opponent does. You can see week after week how difficult it is for everyone, even when teams are winning.

on whether there is a strategy to win more corners:
We play with inverted wingers, so they often develop very well inside. There’s not a lot of space inside, and when they go, there’s a lot of space for the full-back, the six and the nine, and now you can go outside, so we have to look at every angle: what they (opponents) are doing, where they can be weak and where we can exploit the opponent’s weakness.

about the crowd building tension before we take turns:
The stadium’s reaction is something we didn’t plan for. That’s because they believe in the same way they react when we’re under pressure and because we’re on the ball because they know what we can do. It creates that connection and belief and is easier for the players to implement because that noise evokes good things from us and difficult things from the opponent.

for the constant development of our set pieces:
I think last year we scored the most goals in the history of this football club, not just because of the set pieces but because of a lot of things we have. We want to create individual moments, magical moments, many players can create their own goals. We can score goals from short counters and long counters, against slow build-ups, when we need restarts and have the opportunity to open up the opponent. Just maximize every single phase of the game, keep working on it and keep improving.

to send a message to the rest of the league:
I don’t know, we want to have the right to win the games and if we perform like we are doing now, we will win a lot of games. But now it’s about Fulham, we have to go there and we know the experience of last season. We have to prepare really well to secure the right to win there and continue to do so, we don’t know the rest.

about Kiwior and Zinchenko’s performance this evening:
Big compliments to Jakub and Alex. I think it’s the first start for Jakub in a long time. You have to play against this type of opponent, this type of frontline player. Same with Alex, they did great, so great. We trust them, they prepared so well, they had the opportunity and they grabbed it with both hands, so they were really happy for the team.

on the injuries to Gabriel and Calafiori:
Gabi was a big risk today because he sensed something against West Ham. Sunday is also possible with Riccardo, let’s see how he reacts.

on the team’s resilience to overcome a winless streak:
The will to win is there, they try, we do our best to achieve it. It’s true that we’ve been through a lot during this time, the schedule and the opponents we played, a lot of things and you have to react to that. It’s about trying next. Today we won four times in a row, but that doesn’t matter. Now we have to go to Fulham and be better than them to try and win the game. It’s every three days, it’s a crazy schedule, we’re going to need everyone and be very strong mentally because you have to go through these moments.

on whether we use negativity as fuel for positivity:
Personally, no. I don’t know the team. There is no longer any drive for me to have the desire to work as much as possible in the most efficient way possible to try to win and help these guys enjoy what they do and them to give people the chance to win games.
