Super 7 returns to the Protective Stadium in Birmingham

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Thompson High School Warriors lost three games in the regular season – by a total of three points, all in overtime.
But the Warriors (10-3) have rattled off four straight double-digit victories and advanced to the Class 7A championship game for the seventh straight year.
“At the end of the day, I thank the Lord for where this team is,” Thompson coach said Mark Freeman said AL.com after the semifinal win over Enterprise. “It has been an unusual year and an unusual journey. It’s a strange team in terms of the things we’ve been through. I don’t understand it, but I know that these three (losses) are now coming back to help us and I thank God for the journey.”

Central-Phenix City (10-2), coached by Patrick Nixalso took an unusual route to the championship game after losing twice in three weeks in October. Like Thompson, the Red Devils have won four straight and qualified for the Class 7A title game for the second straight year.
It will be a championship rematch when Thompson (10-3) and Central (10-2) meet in the Class 7A championship game on Wednesday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Protective Stadium in Birmingham. The rematch caps the first day of the Super 7 Championship, with two girls flag title games taking place earlier in the day.
The Red Devils earned a 21-19 victory over Thompson in the 2023 title game when the Warriors misjudged a 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter and missed a late field goal attempt.

The Class 7A championship game features two of the state’s best quarterbacks – sophomore Thompson Trent Seabornone of the top quarterback prospects in the country in the class of 2027; and Central-Phenix City is highly regarded Andrew Alford. Thompson’s defense also includes Auburn commits Jared Smith at outside linebacker and Anquon Fegans at defensive back, as well as a Tulane commit Nicholas Alston on the defensive line.

Central offensive player Forest Rep is committed to Alabama and is an outside linebacker Make Green is committed to Troy while Junior is a pass rusher Tristan Lyles is one of the state’s top candidates in the class of 2026.
Thompson and Central have played four times since 2018, all in the 7A championship games. Central won in 2018 and 2023 and Thompson won in 2019 and 2021.

All Super 7 matches will be broadcast live on the Alabama Public Television Network and streamed in live video on the NFHS Network. The AHSAA Radio Network will also provide coverage.

Here are a few more Super 7 notes:

  • Two teams – Moody in Class 5A and Tuscaloosa Academy in Class 2A – are playing for an AHSAA state football championship for the first time.
  • Houston Academy is playing in the championship round in Class 3A for the first time since 1973.
  • Parker, in Class 6A, is playing for a state football championship for the first time since 1980.
  • Cherokee County in Class 4A is playing in the championship game for the third straight year after losing to Andalusia in 2022 and Montgomery Catholic in 2023.
  • Montgomery Catholic won the Class 4A title last season and will play in the Class 5A championship game on Thursday – riding a 28-game winning streak. The Knights are 54-2 Kirk Johnson as head coach.
  • Saraland is in the Class 6A title game for the third straight year after winning the title in 2022 and losing to Clay-Chalkville in 2023.
  • The Central-Phenix City girls flag football team is undefeated and ranked No. 1 nationally USA today and continues his 36-game winning streak.
  • Only four teams can complete undefeated seasons this week – Wadley (12-0) in 1A, Montgomery Catholic (13-0) in 5A, Saraland (13-0) in 6A and Central-Phenix City (18-0) in Class 6A -7A flag.
  • Wadley (12-0) is averaging 55.5 points per game in Thursday’s championship game against Maplesville (12-2).
  • Reeltown (13-1) in Class 2A is playing in the championship game for the second straight year after losing to Fyffe last year. The Rebels opened the season with a Kickoff Classic loss to Class 3A and have won 13 straight since.
