South Korea’s defense minister resigns after martial law crisis: report | News

BREAK,

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency said Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun resigned following President Yoon Suk-yeol’s short-lived declaration of martial law.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has accepted the resignation of the country’s Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and appointed the country’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia Choi Byung-hyuk as the new defense minister, the country’s news agency Yonhap reported.

The president’s office on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Choi, a former army general, as the new defense minister.

According to Reuters news agency, Kim had reportedly advised President Yoon to declare martial law on Tuesday evening, a move that was quickly aborted after South Korea’s parliament voted for Yoon to reverse his decision.

Yoon’s nomination of a new defense minister is his first official act since the declaration of martial law was lifted in the early hours of Wednesday.

Amid public outrage over the attempt to impose martial law and opposition parties’ condemnation of Yoon, South Korea’s parliament passed a motion to impeach the president early Thursday.

The main opposition Democratic Party called Yoon’s attempt to declare martial law a treasonous act and its lawmakers could launch a vote for impeachment as early as Friday.

However, Yoon’s own party has vowed to resist efforts to remove the president, putting the process in doubt.

This is breaking news. We will tell you more about this shortly
