Taylor Swift dominates the charts with 26.6 billion streams

When it comes to pop culture, 2024 has undoubtedly been the year of Taylor Swift, with a mania for the pop stars Epoch tour dominates the headlines worldwide. Now Spotify has revealed that the singer-songwriter has broken a number of records in the last year – including an extraordinary 26.6 billion streams for her music.

Among Australian artists, The Wiggles were the most streamed, followed by The Kid Laroi, AC/DC, Vance Joy and Rufus Du Sol. But it wasn’t good news for new Australian music: Joy’s Riptide was the most streamed local song despite being released in 2013. Almost 45 years after its release on the 1980 album Back in blackAC/DC You shook me all night long came fifth.

At the top of Spotify Wrapped, the music streamer’s annual chart equivalent, was Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Section: The Anthology.

Released on April 19, the surprise double album became the first in Spotify history to reach more than 300 million streams in a single day and became the most streamed album in a single day of 2024. It broke another record on its release day Fortnight – featuring Post Malone – became the most streamed song in a single day in Spotify history. Until April 22nd The Tortured Poets Department became the most streamed Spotify album within a week.

Women generally received higher ratings this year, with Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande making the top 10 albums list Hit me hard and soft And Eternal sunshine respectively; Eight of the top spots in the top half of the list were occupied by women. Sabrina Carpenter is the most streamed song in the world espresso.

Thanks to artists like Beyoncé, Shaboozey, Lana Del Rey, and Post Malone, the country genre is having a heyday across the board. In Australia, country sensation Zach Bryan was the third most streamed artist locally, despite failing to crack the top 10 worldwide.

High-profile collaborations were also judged this year, including Billie Eilish and Charli XCX, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus. Die with a smile by Mars and Lady Gaga was Spotify’s most shared song on social platforms.

Customers around the world share their most listened to tracks of the year, while Spotify charts reveal their individual favorites.
