2024 College Football Playoff Rankings: Week 14 Poll Announced by Committee | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

B/R

In theory, the College Football Playoff picture should become clearer with just a week left in the regular season before the conference championship games.

That theory didn’t explain the complete chaos that unfolded last Saturday, particularly in the SEC. There are now a lot of question marks about what the 12-team field will ultimately look like, and those questions will only get louder as we head into another week of chaos with rivalry games.

The selection committee provided some answers to its overall thinking with the latest rankings on Tuesday. Note that the rankings will look different than the current projected standings, as the top four ranked conference champions will receive the top four seeds and associated first-round byes.

Additionally, the fifth-ranked conference champion will also be automatically included in the field, meaning a team outside the top 12 rankings could be in the CFP.

Saturday was not a good day for many SEC playoff contenders, but a very bad and forgettable one.

First, Ole Miss suffered its third loss of the season when it lost a game to Florida 6-5. That was just the beginning of the tremendous results, as Alabama failed to score a touchdown in a 24-3 loss to a 6-5 Oklahoma team that hadn’t beaten an FBS team since September.

As if that weren’t enough, Texas A&M suffered its third loss, falling in four overtimes to a 5-6 Auburn team that must defeat the Crimson Tide to be eligible to bowl.

Even Georgia allowed 226 rushing yards to 2-9 UMass, although the Bulldogs can at least take solace in knowing they won the game and will land comfortably in the playoffs as long as they take care of business against rival Georgia Tech .

In a bit of an ironic twist, Indiana may have been one of the biggest playoff winners on Saturday, even though it was eliminated with a 38-15 loss to Ohio State.

Although this was the Hoosiers’ first loss of the season, there were questions about their overall record, even while they were undefeated. After all, their best win in terms of Big Ten standings came against 6-5 Washington, and there was one narrative It turned out that Indiana wasn’t one of the many SEC teams that suffered multiple losses and played tougher schedules.

This narrative gained traction after the Buckeyes comfortably handled Curt Cignetti’s team. And then it all came crashing down as many of the SEC teams that supposedly deserved the lead over the Hoosiers lost to mediocre opponents.

The chaos that helped Indiana and others wasn’t just limited to the SEC, as Kansas, 5-6, handed Colorado a third loss, while Arizona State handed BYU its second loss.

As a result, nine teams still have a chance to reach the Big 12 Championship Game in the final week of the regular season. Given that every team in the conference has at least two losses and there will be more losses before the final 12-team field is announced, it’s difficult to imagine the Big 12 having more than one team in bring the playoffs.

It also wouldn’t be surprising if the ACC ended up with one team in the playoffs, even though it still has three legitimate contenders in SMU, Miami and Clemson.

The Mustangs control their own destiny and have already secured a spot in the ACC Championship Game, while the Hurricanes are just one win over Syracuse away from joining them. Still, if Miami slipped up, Clemson would be in the conference title game and perhaps have a chance to make the playoffs.

One thing is certain, with so much at stake. The rankings will look different this time next week.
