Bad Bunny is Spotify’s top Latin artist, while Mexican music is on the rise again with Peso Pluma

Reggaeton singer Bad Bunny cemented his place at the top as the world’s most streamed Latin artist this year on Spotify. But 2024 was also a milestone for Mexican music, which is making a strong comeback as it makes its way onto the mainstream music scene.

Mexican music, or Música mexicana, is now the most streamed Latin American genre in the United States, dominating in 26 states. It is also the third most listened to Latin music genre worldwide on Spotify.

A key player behind Música Mexicana’s mainstream rise is Mexican singer Peso Pluma, who is the second most streamed Latin artist on Spotify after Bad Bunny. His distinctive “Corridos Tumbados,” fused with trap and reggaeton as well as other regional Mexican music genres, made the young musician famous.

Colombian reggaeton singers Feid and Karol G follow Peso Pluma in third and fourth place. This makes Karol G the most listened to Latin American artist on Spotify for the fifth year in a row. Additionally, her album “Mañana Será Bonito” was the most streamed Latin album as well as the fourth most listened to album worldwide.

The three male Latin singers are also among the top 10 most streamed artists worldwide on Spotify. Bad Bunny is No. 3, Peso Pluma is No. 7 and Feid is No. 10. They stand alongside heavyweights like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, among others.

Consumer demand for Latin music has steadily increased over the past decade, largely due to the growing popularity of Latin urban genres such as reggaeton in the mainstream.

Previously, the Latin American music industry had long relied on pop and rock en español as well as Mexican music to popularize Spanish-language songs.

But the tide seems to be turning again: four of the ten most streamed Latin artists worldwide on Spotify are focused on música mexicana: Peso Pluma, Junior H, Natanael Cano and the American regional Mexican band Fuerza Regida. The six remaining artists make reggaeton music: Bad Bunny, Feid, Karol G, Rauw Alejandro, Myke Towers and Anuel AA.

Chilean singers FloyyMenor and Cris Mj’s reggaeton hit “Gata Only” was Spotify’s top Latin song this year. The song was also the fourth most streamed song worldwide.

The number of Latin music listeners on Spotify worldwide increased 986% from 2014 to 2023 as the company expanded its presence across Latin America.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Latin music revenue in the U.S. rose 7% this year, reaching a record high of $685 million, continuing to outpace already strong growth in overall recorded music markets.
