Missing boat found, child’s body still not found

The boat carrying two men and a boy fishing for shrimp was found on Friday.

The bodies of Michael Slezak and boat owner Sam Wooley were recovered Saturday.

But the child who was also on board is still missing.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said they found the vessel in Pelican Bay on a Wednesday afternoon.

At the moment, it looks like the boat sank after the shrimp net it was towing got caught on something underwater, and the sudden stop may have dragged the boat under.

It turned out that a snag from one of the searchers was crucial in locating the boat on Wednesday.

The technology used in the search gave searchers an idea of where the object was.

But when the ship still couldn’t be found, a deputy used a grappling hook behind a search boat and actually caught it.

They found the boat, but the cabin is missing.

Still, the discovery could play an important role in the continued search for their youngest passenger: 7-year-old Hunter Slezak.

“It will,” says the sheriff. “And there are a lot of factors at play…temperatures, wind, currents. But we know based on where the captain and Hunter’s father were recovered and what line of debris was discovered.” The Coast Guard is running in a pretty tight pattern in the same direction, so we’re obviously monitoring that very well, but since the ship is currently on Once it’s in place, we’ve secured it…we’re starting “We have a starting point to work from.”

The sheriff says boaters should always make sure those on board are wearing appropriate flotation devices.

And when it comes to children’s life jackets, make sure they are fastened properly.

The search will continue Thursday morning, weather permitting.
