Hunter Slezak still missing: Boat containing two deceased men found as search enters fifth day

On Wednesday, authorities found the boat that 7-year-old Hunter Slezak was in when he, his father and another man disappeared during a shrimping trip off Dauphin Island, Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said.

As the search for Hunter entered its fifth day, there were still no signs of the missing boy, the sheriff said.

“We can confirm that we have located the boat. “We have not found the child,” Burch said during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

The boat was secured, Burch said, and divers were in the water with sonar equipment searching for Hunter.

The sheriff said the boat’s cabin appeared to be separate from the vessel, “and we did not find that.”

Authorities aren’t sure whether Hunter was in the cabin when it capsized Friday, prompting a large-scale search that resulted in the bodies of Hunter’s father, Michael Slezak, and Sam Wooley being found.

The US Coast Guard led the search before indefinitely suspending its rescue and recovery efforts on Sunday night.

“We are deeply saddened and extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends and communities affected by this heartbreaking and tragic incident,” said Capt. Robert Tucker, deputy commander of the Coast Guard Mobile Sector.

“Ceasing an active search for a missing child is an extremely difficult decision and is made only after the greatest efforts have been made. We thank all search and rescue teams who worked determinedly around the clock in the hope of a different outcome.”

Hunter’s mother, Megan Slezak, feared the worst for her son in a Facebook post

“I just need closure to be able to bury his body,” she wrote. “I didn’t think my heart could break any more, but not being able to find my son’s body is so incredibly painful. Mom, hold your babies. They could be recorded in no time. This is THE WORST pain ever.”

The Sheriff’s Office is supported by multiple agencies, including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Dauphin Island Police Department, the Marine Resource Division and the Baldwin County ALEA. Boats, drones and a helicopter were used in the search.

A GoFundMe was started to help the Slezak family with funeral costs and has already surpassed its goal of $25,000.

Burch said the sheriff’s office will search for Hunter “until we can find him.”
