Once again, coach Greg McDermott defeated the top team in the country.

His Creighton team defeated No. 1 Kansas 76-63 in the Big 12-Big East battle on Wednesday night at the CHI Health Center in Omaha. It was the first loss of the season for the Jayhawks, who have spent the entire season ranked No. 1 in the AP poll.

The Bluejays have beaten a No. 1 team at home in consecutive seasons after last year’s upset win over UConn. This was the program’s first win against a top team. Naturally, the second such victory sparked a huge celebration on the Nebraska field.

“I think with any team, you’re selling a dream, you’re selling a plan,” McDermott said. “Until you can validate that plan with a win like this, I’m not sure the buy-in is going to be what it is going to be now… Everyone stepped up and did a great job when we needed them . What can she say? This is the No. 1 building where teams will obviously die.

Creighton led throughout Wednesday night and opened the game with a quick 10-2 score to take immediate control of the game. Steven Ashworth even scored a goal from the logo before halftime for the Bluejays, who went into the locker room with a 10-point lead.

Although Kansas opened the second half with a 9-0 run, Creighton responded with a 10-0 run of its own and immediately took away the momentum. The Bluejays also rallied late, and nothing Kansas did worked. The Jayhawks went scoreless for more than four minutes, allowing Creighton to extend its lead to 16 points. From there, the Bluejays cruised to a 13-point win without much trouble.

Creighton big man Ryan Kalkbrenner, who dropped 49 points in the season opener, was questionable for the game because of a lower-body injury. The 7-footer missed his final game against Notre Dame, snapping a three-game losing streak that pushed him completely out of the rankings. However, Kalkbrenner more than held his own against Kansas big man and All-American Hunter Dickinson. Kalkbrenner finished with a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

However, he had the greatest impact on defense. He held Dickinson to just six points and two field goals.

“It’s just a brave, courageous effort,” McDermott said. “He hasn’t been training all week and we had to make a few different moves to get him on the floor today. He showed a lot of courage and bravery. Two great, big boys are playing today, I’m definitely happy about that.” Kalkbrenner is on my team.

Pop Isaacs led Creighton with 27 points while shooting 6 of 9 from the 3-point line. Ashworth added 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Dajuan Harris Jr. led Kansas with 15 points and five assists, and Zeke Mayo added 12 points. Rylan Griffen didn’t play for Kansas because of the flu.

Kansas started Wednesday’s game 7-0 and already had several important wins under its belt. The Jayhawks secured a three-point win over North Carolina after nearly blowing a 20-point lead, and then last week in Las Vegas they beat Cooper Flagg and Duke to remain undefeated. Kansas will face Missouri next Sunday before hosting NC State and Brown to complete its non-conference slate.

Although Kansas’ success this season likely depends on how it fares in the Big 12, Creighton has finally proven that Bill Self’s group is beatable. Perhaps more important to McDermott, however, is that the Bluejays’ losses are now well behind them.
