Updates: Power outages are reported as winds increase and snow falls across Indiana

A severe weather system is moving through central Indiana with wind gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour, rain turning to snow and temperatures plummeting.

INDIANAPOLIS – A storm of arctic weather will blow through central Indiana on Wednesday evening, bringing strong winds, subzero wind chills and bursts of snow.

The system moved into the area around 9 p.m. Police in Boone County reported whiteout conditions in the northern part of the county at 9:45 p.m. A wind gust of 62 miles per hour was reported in Indianapolis just after 10 p.m.

With temperatures hovering around 40°C during the day on Wednesday, the rapid drop could result in flash freezes on roads during the overnight hours.

As the system continued to move south, both AES Indiana and Duke Energy reported power outages.

12:14 a.m – As of Thursday, 12:14 a.m., AES reports 5,520 customers without power.


00:04 am – Duke Energy says it is dealing with 107 outages across Indiana, leaving 3,742 customers currently without power.


11:40 p.m – In Indianapolis the temperature has fallen below freezing and is currently 30 degrees.

AES Indiana now reports more than 5,300 customers without power across Indianapolis. Duke Energy is currently reporting approximately 3,900 customers without service with 90 active outages.

11:05 p.m – Angela Buchman reports on the arrival of strong winds and falling temperatures.

11 p.m – The temperature in Indianapolis is reported to be 33 degrees at 11 p.m. Strong winds are blowing through downtown, although major roads in Marion County appear to be wet but clear on INDOT cameras in the area.

The biggest concern right now is the increasing number of power outages reported by AES and Duke Energy. As of 11 p.m., AES Indiana reported more than 5,400 customers without power, while Duke reported about 1,800 across the region.

10:50 p.m – A wind advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday for Bartholomew, Boone, Brown, Carroll, Clinton, Decatur, Delaware, Fountain, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Howard, Johnson, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery. Morgan, Owen, Putnam, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Tippecanoe, Tipton and Warren counties
