Drivers and road crews are preparing for winter weather in the Detroit area

DETROIT (WXYZ) — It’s that time of year again for drivers in the Detroit area. On a winter night there is a simple question with different answers.

“So when you see snow in the forecast, what do you see?” I asked Metro Detroit drivers.

“Scared,” said Leah Graze of Livonia. “The thought of driving in the winter scares me.”

“Inconvenience,” said Kelvin Ambers of Detroit.

“Good question; “I see money,” said Oneil Colley, owner of Ravendale Lanscaping. “Every snowflake costs dollars!”

Colley named his company after the east Detroit neighborhood where he grew up. He may be one of the few drivers behind the wheel who was actually looking forward to the snow on Wednesday, especially after last winter.

“Last winter we didn’t have that much snow. “It was pretty tough,” Colley said. “I went through a lot last winter.”

He and his two other drivers will be out all night Wednesday salting parking lots and driveways for customers and are ready to plow if needed.

The county’s road authorities will also try to prevent a repeat of last Friday’s incident, when slippery roads shut down two major highways. Wayne County will use its new salt dome for the first time in Plymouth and Oakland County says they will spray roads with liquid brine.

“Especially the ramps and overpasses on the highways,” said Criag Bryson of the Oakland County Road Commission. “This delays ice formation.”

While not every driver wants to be out on nights like Wednesday, some have to be and say it’s best to use common sense behind the wheel.

“I take my time, I give myself enough time, I leave early,” Graze said.

“I just try to go slow, but you just have to pay attention to everyone around you,” Livonia resident Lindsay Vancamp said.
