The first snow of the year closes schools in the Lansing area

LANSING – The first measurable snow fell in the Lansing area overnight, causing slippery road conditions and school closures.

The National Weather Service said blowing snow will be a problem throughout the day Thursday and the weather will calm through the weekend.

“In addition to persistent lake effect snow, windy conditions will prevail today, with northwest winds 15-30 mph, reaching 30-40 mph at times,” the weather service posted on social media platform X. “The strong winds “Be careful of icy roads and limited visibility today.”

More than two dozen school districts across the region closed school Thursday, including Dansville, Fowlerville, Haslett, Holt, Ingham ISD, Lansing Catholic, Lansing Schools District, Leslie, Okemos, Perry, Mason, Bath, DeWitt, Clinton County RESA, Fowler, Portland, Pewamo-Westphalia, St. Johns, Bellevue, Charlotte, Eaton RESA, Grand Ledge, Maple Valley, Waverly, Stockbridge, Webberville and Williamston, according to WILX TV-10.
