The first snow of the year is closing schools in the Lansing area, which could make driving a challenge today

LANSING – The first measurable snow fell in the Lansing area overnight, causing slippery road conditions and school closures.

The National Weather Service said blowing snow will be a problem throughout the day Thursday and the weather will calm through the weekend.

“In addition to persistent lake effect snow, windy conditions will prevail today, with northwest winds 15-30 mph, reaching 30-40 mph at times,” the weather service posted on social media platform X. “The strong winds “Be careful of icy roads and limited visibility today.”

More than two dozen school districts across the region closed school Thursday, including Dansville, Fowlerville, Haslett, Holt, Ingham ISD, Lansing Catholic, Lansing Schools District, Leslie, Okemos, Perry, Mason, Bath, DeWitt, Clinton County RESA, Fowler, Portland, Pewamo-Westphalia, St. Johns, Bellevue, Charlotte, Eaton RESA, Grand Ledge, Maple Valley, Waverly, Stockbridge, Webberville and Williamston, according to WILX TV-10.

Driving in Michigan was expected to be challenging on Thursday, particularly in West Michigan.

“Lake effect snow and blowing snow will cause poor traffic conditions in western Lower Michigan today. Roads are likely to remain slick due to constant blowing and drifting snow. Snow amounts will be heaviest toward the lakeshore and taper inland toward Highway 127,” the service said in a statement.

While there was about an inch of snow in the Lansing area, 2 to 5 inches of white snow was forecast along the US-131 corridor, and 4 to 8 inches or more of snow was expected along the shores of Lake Michigan.

A winter weather advisory was in effect for the Lansing area from Wednesday evening until 1 a.m. Friday, but that advisory has been lifted for the Lansing area. It remains in effect in the Western Michigan and Northern Michigan areas.

Consumers Energy reported possible outages in the Lansing area; The Lansing Board of Water & Light had about two dozen customers without power, according to the utility’s online outage map.

According to flylansing.com, inbound and outbound flights at Capital Region International Airport were not affected.

The Lansing area has a 20% chance of snow Thursday, with scattered snow blowing throughout the day and highs of 30 degrees predicted. Wind gusts can reach up to 33 miles per hour. The night temperature on Thursday is expected to drop to 17 degrees and the maximum temperature on Friday is 29 degrees with gusty winds.

Temperatures are expected to rise to 45 degrees by Sunday.
