Kylian Mbappe missed his second penalty in a row in Real Madrid’s defeat to Athletic Club last night and the pressure on him is now mounting.

The player, who clearly lacks confidence, failed to take a penalty against Getafe at the weekend, giving the chance to Jude Bellingham, who converted the penalty.

After his decision to give up the right to take penalties was widely debated, he took another step last night only to see Julen Agirrezabala follow the same path as Caoimhin Kelleher and make a similar save.

Guti talks about Mbappe’s technique

Speaking to the media after the game, Real Madrid legend and former striker Guti commented on Mbappe’s missed penalty at San Mames, pointing out that there was everything wrong with that shot.

However, he began by applauding the Frenchman for taking the penalty at all despite his crisis of confidence.

“I welcome his decision to take it (the penalty).”

He then continued to praise the player for how spectacular he always was from the spot, saying:

“He always put them away. Here, in France or at PSG. Even if he failed at Liverpool, if there is still one, you have to put it away. Although it is true that it was badly shot.”

Guti then explained why he described Mbappe’s penalty as a “bad” shot, explaining that the height at which he placed the ball did not help his case.

“It’s a bit of a draw like the Liverpool game. Halfway up where they give the goalkeeper a big advantage to be able to stop him.”

He also spoke about how the Frenchman used his body language and technique to reveal his shooting position, which is very important at the elite level.

“Mbappe is not in a good position and then he makes it very clear. I think he opens his foot really wide and makes it clear where he’s going to hit.”

Having now missed two penalties in a row, Mbappe is under enormous pressure, especially as the game against Athletic ended in defeat.

The French superstar must compete in the coming games and improve his situation as quickly as possible.
