The Anchorage School District switched to remote learning Thursday as freezing rain created dangerous driving conditions in the city.

The district initially announced a two-hour delay Thursday morning before making the remote learning decision. A message to staff described “poor weather and dangerous road conditions.”

Girdwood K-8 School remained open Thursday, the district said.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Anchorage until 3 p.m. Thursday. Similar warnings were in effect for Mat-Su, Valdez and the Copper River Basin. Motorists reported very slippery conditions around Anchorage Thursday morning.

In Mat-Su, Knik-Goose Bay Road was closed in both directions at mile marker 15.5 near Gleason Lane, Alaska State Troopers said Thursday morning. The road is expected to be closed for “several hours” as officers document the scene and clear vehicles and debris, cops said.

There is no detour, they said, and advised drivers to check 511.alaska.gov for updates.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
