Ilona Maher takes second place on “Dancing with the Stars”. See who won

After a season that promoted female empowerment, body positivity and several viral moments, Olympic rugby player Ilona Maher came in second place in last night’s Dancing with the Stars finale.

“The Bachelor” star Joey Graziadei and his pro partner Jenna Johnson have been named the winners of Season 33.

Maher, a native of Burlington, Vermont, and her pro partner Alan Bersten performed two final routines on Tuesday’s episode, including a freestyle to a cover of Chappell Roan’s “Femininomenon.” She also performed in a redemption dance, getting a rep in a style she struggled with early in the competition.

“The mirror ball won’t bother me that much,” Maher said before her routine. “I think this applies to all girls who have been told they are too tall or too muscular and not pretty.”

Ilona Maher breaks down the emotional jive of week four in the “DWTS” finale

For the Redemption Dance, Ilona Maher was asked by the jury to repeat the jive that she performed in the fourth round of the competition.

This week, Maher struggled with the dance’s fast footwork and burst into tears during the show, famously saying that she had “been better, Carrie Ann.”

Last night, Maher and her partner Alan Bersten danced the jive to “Shake A Tail Feather” by Ray Charles & The Blues Brothers for the Redemption Dance.

“We are only two dances away from winning the Mirror Ball and I know I still have more to give,” Maher said before the performance. “So believe me, there will only be tears of joy tonight because this dance will be perfect.”

All three judges – Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli – gave her nine out of ten for the dance.

Each “Dancing with the Stars” finalist specifically performs a routine for their final dance in the finale.

Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten put on a stunning show that included references to their rugby careers and highlights from their time on the show.

It was performed to “Femininomenon” by District 78 ft. Mona Ruesaid, which Maher said she chose “for all the girls who see themselves in me.”

“Our freestyle sums up our journey,” Maher said before the routine. “There will be a lot of ups and downs and all the special parts of this competition. I’ve gotten to play so many characters, but tonight I’m just going to be full of pride, and I’m just going to go out and dance like me.

For the first time this season, Maher earned a perfect score for the dance, receiving tens from all three judges.
