The earthquake shakes residents of Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties

Thursday morning’s earthquake struck off the Humboldt Coast, but people in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties report feeling the shaking.

It wasn’t just people in Sonoma or Humboldt counties who felt the dizzying effects of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Humboldt County Thursday morning.

Lisa Galligan commented on Facebook: “I’m on the fifth floor of my job in downtown Santa Rosa and felt some dizziness while sitting at the time the earthquake occurred, but only realized after the fact that it may have been related to the earthquake could be related.”

Sara Bush responded to Galligan’s comment: “To me it’s literally the same thing! I had to sit down. Without the earthquake warning that occurred just seconds before the dizziness, I wouldn’t have put two and two together.”

Christina Mckenzie commented: “In Santa Rosa near Fulton and Guerneville I felt like I was having the worst vertigo of my life. I thought there was something wrong with me! Severe nausea and headaches followed. It was like no other earthquake I have felt before. It felt like it was going in circles, but underfoot it was so bizarre. I spoke to a colleague in Eureka and she thought the ground was opening up beneath them. What was said was like nothing she had felt before.

Christina J Craft-Cass and Sue Slater said they felt the quake in Rohnert Park.

In an email to the Press Democrat, Judy Johnson said, “I was in a park class at Rohnert Park with my dog, standing on a basketball court, when the warning sounded.” People said, “I don’t feel anything,” and left back to their cars when another woman said, “There it is, I feel it.” And so did I! We looked up at the trees, which were visibly swaying, and not just a little. It fluctuated very noticeably. The movement, which continued to be undulating as opposed to a twitch or tremor, seemed to last for a very long time. I’ve experienced major quakes before and I said, “This one is big.” Looks like I was right. We received text messages from family members, one with a short video of her pool water being very choppy. My husband said he went to our pool and there was a wave going back and forth under the pool cover.”

April Mollison commented: “Shopping at the Rohnert Park Costco and suddenly phones rang alerting shoppers to the earthquake. The lights swayed back and forth and it felt like the ground was undulating.”

Sandy Allikas responded to Slater’s comment: “I didn’t feel it in the RP, but my house creaked strangely for a few minutes.”

Angela Ban commented: “I didn’t feel it, but our bedroom door was opening and closing when it happened.”

Melinda Altenburg said, “I didn’t feel anything except my chandelier swaying.”

Ginger Schechter Gong posted a video of her chandelier swinging in her home and said, “Yes! It was awesome!!! Just before I filmed this, I was swaying and moving in circles! And the blinds all over the house were moving back and forth!”

Linda Kramer commented, “The chandelier swayed in West Petaluma, but I felt no movement. It was just fun to watch the sway that lasted for a long time.”

Many reported not feeling any tremors. But Facebook users Bobby and Lea Hughes commented: “I felt it in Guerneville. The ground shook slightly and my computer monitor shook for a few seconds.”

Judy Vonheeder Mefferd commented: “I was sitting at work in Cotati and thought, Wow, my vertigo was really hitting me hard! I definitely felt that.”

Joe Wilson wrote: “It felt really good for 30 to 60 seconds at Windsor. A very even shaking. I first received the alert on my phone before the earthquake hit. Good job USGS alert system!”

Monique Sawyer was in Mendocino County when she felt the quake: “I felt like I was rolling around here in Ukiah. We’re on the second floor and we feel like it’s pretty strong.”

Sally Wieland responded to Sawyer and said she felt the earthquake in Brooktrails.

The quake was also felt in Napa County. Nicole Jones commented: “I felt it working in St Helena. My mother-in-law didn’t feel it in my house in Bennett Valley.”

Peggy Rodriguez even said she felt tremors as far south as San Francisco.

Sam Sherman emailed the Press Democrat: “I am in Davis, about 12 miles east of Sacramento. I perceived the earthquake as a long movement. My pool overflowed sideways as the water oscillated from north to south for about 10 minutes. I called a friend who lives in Bodega Bay near Ren’s Gallery on Highway 1. He said he didn’t feel anything from the quake.”
