Fulham 3-1 Brighton: Alex Iwobi’s brace helps the hosts win

Brighton suffered only their third Premier League defeat of the season as two goals from Alex Iwobi and an own goal from the unfortunate Matt O’Riley helped Fulham win at wet and windy Craven Cottage.

The game was played in terrible conditions with heavy rain and strong winds, but there was no excuse for Bart Verbruggen’s early mistake to give the hosts the lead.

After just three minutes, Brighton’s Dutch goalkeeper, looking to play a short pass to teammate Carlos Baleba in the penalty area, saw Alex Iwobi intercept and slot the ball into an unguarded net, resulting in his fourth league goal of the season.

Fulham had a chance to quickly double their lead when Iwobi appeared to be on target, but Igor Julio passed well and covered well.

Brighton got their deserved equalizer 11 minutes into the second half.

Jan Paul van Hecke played a high pass and Joao Pedro, nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award in November, used a clever touch to guide Baleba to fire low past Bernd Leno from 20 yards out.

It was a beautiful goal, followed by a special celebration as Baleba showed off his gymnastics skills with an acrobatic somersault, although it was not the springboard for Brighton’s seventh win of the season.

Fulham fortunately took the lead back when Andreas Pereira hit a corner from the left in the 79th minute which hit O’Riley and bounced into his own net.

Iwobi then sealed the win with a powerful strike in the 87th minute, scoring his second goal to secure the three points for Fulham and move up to sixth place – one point behind the fifth-placed visitors.

However, both teams will drop a place if Tottenham beat Bournemouth in Thursday’s other Premier League game.
