New year, new venue

For the first time in 15 years, the Alabama high school football championships will not be played at Bryant-Denny Stadium or Jordan-Hare Stadium.

In June, the AHSAA announced that the two main stadiums had been removed from the rotation to host its annual Super 7 high school football championships.

AHSAA officials said the move was “necessary” due to the expanded College Football Playoff schedule. The new plan would require both the University of Alabama and Auburn University to host playoff games, which would conflict with the Super 7.

The stadiums and cities have taken turns hosting the championships since 2009. Legion Field was the previous championship game site from 1996 to 2008.

All state championship games will be played Dec. 4-6 at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. AHSAA said they will continue to explore other rotation options.
