Bill Belichick of the University of North Carolina discusses the vacant head coach position

Belichick has been active in the media on various platforms this season, giving him rare access to one of the game’s greatest minds. But that career change never felt permanent, as he and the New England Patriots parted ways after the end of the 2023 season, ending a brilliant streak that included six Super Bowl titles for the franchise.

Many have speculated that Belichick wants an NFL coaching job, which is all he’s known since the turn of the millennium. He interviewed twice for the Falcons’ job opening last cycle.

Three head coaches have already been fired this season: Robert Saleh of the New York Jets, Dennis Allen of the New Orleans Saints and Matt Eberflus of the Chicago Bears. Belichick could be a candidate for any of those teams, although the Jets feel like he doesn’t have a chance yet given his past public statements about the franchise and the fact that he was previously their head coach and never coached a game before retiring .

There could also be other openings across the league. It would be difficult to match the qualifications and credibility that Belichick offers, even with a few factors making the hire difficult – namely his age and organizational strength.

If Belichick has looked at the landscape surrounding the NFL – after all, he’s always one step ahead – and decided he might not be a good fit for the league this offseason, why not consider college football ? It would be as big a story as Deion Sanders’ visit to Colorado last year.

Maybe Belichick still has a few old tricks up his sleeve. His offseason promises to be a fascinating story.
