The hunt continues for the gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson early Wednesday. Here’s what we know about the suspect’s movements before and immediately after the shooting, based on visual evidence and police statements.

Before the shooting

A person who police suspect was the shooter had been staying at the HI New York City Hostel near West 103rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side, according to law enforcement officials. He was captured there on surveillance footage.

Early Wednesday before the shooting, surveillance cameras at a Starbucks near West 56th Street and Avenue of the Americas captured the partially hidden face of the man believed to be the suspect. It’s unclear exactly when the footage was taken.

About 6:30am Surveillance footage obtained by The New York Times shows the suspect walking in the area of ​​the shooting about 15 minutes earlier. In the video, he appears to be talking on the phone while walking along the sidewalk about 175 feet from where Mr. Thompson was shot.

The shooting

6:44 am Police said Mr. Thompson was seen on video walking on West 54th Street toward the entrance of New York’s Hilton Midtown Hotel, where UnitedHealthcare was holding its annual investor meeting.

Around 6:45 a.m Footage obtained by The Times shows the gunman approaching Mr. Thompson from behind and firing several shots. The gunman stops to fumble with his gun, which appears to have jammed, and fires again as he walks toward Mr. Thompson, who has fallen to the ground.

Suspect flees

Moments later The shooter can be seen in the video jogging across the street. A witness photo also showed a person believed to be the suspect walking through a pedestrian mall onto West 55th Street. Police later found a cell phone in the hallway.

According to New York Police Department Chief Detective Joseph Kenny, the suspect then got on a bicycle and rode north. Footage released by the department showed the person riding a bicycle turning from West 55th Street onto Avenue of the Americas.

6:48am Police arrived at the scene and found Mr Thompson lying on the pavement outside the Hilton Hotel. At the same time, the suspect was seen driving on Center Drive into Central Park, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.
