The storm causes temperatures to rise to 40 to 50 degrees

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Rain fell in the Southeast and snow melted in Southcentral Alaska on Wednesday due to the latest wave of stormy weather.

A winter weather advisory for freezing rain is in effect for Anchorage and surrounding areas from Wednesday night through Thursday afternoon as a storm system moves through the state. A light layer of ice may form. Therefore, be very careful on roads and highways. Freezing rain is possible until Thursday morning.

Many parts of the state experienced warmer temperatures on Wednesday.

Palmer reached 49 degrees and Butte recorded 51 degrees! Temperatures reached highs in the 30s and 40s across most of Southcentral, with the exception of Glennallen/Gulkana where the temperature peaked at 14°C.

This storm isn’t the only one this week – there’s another one coming.

This wet weather will continue until Thursday. To the east, in the Copper River Basin, several inches of snow are more likely.

There will be more rain in the southeast. The region has experienced heavy snowfall and heavy rain over the past 10 days.

Southcentral will get a mix of snow, rain and freezing rain – a messy winter mix – and winds will increase in the higher elevations of the Anchorage hill and near Turnagain Arm. Winds will also be gusty in Seward, Cordova, Girdwood and Whittier.

The hot spot for Alaska on Wednesday was Sitka at 53 degrees and the cold spot was Noatak at 18 degrees below zero!
