Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker at Alabama A&M, died as a result of injuries sustained during the Magic City Classic in October.

“He had multiple brain bleeds and brain swelling. He had to be drained via a tube to relieve the pressure and after two days of severe pressure we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was a last resort to try to save his life,” reads one on GoFundMe published update.

Burnett played in seven games this season. He transferred from Grambling State to Alabama A&M.

The GoFundMe set up for Burnett reported that he turned 20 in October. More than $26,000 was raised for his family.

“Today our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.,” said Dr. Paul A. Bryant, Alabama A&M athletics director. “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; He was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership and compassion left an indelible impression on everyone who knew him. While words cannot adequately express our sadness, we are humbled by the strength of his family who stood by him throughout this unimaginable ordeal.”

Alabama A&M said arrangements for the memorial service will be announced later.
