Dan Campbell: I felt like we had to finish it on offense

The Lions have been aggressive on fourth downs throughout head coach Dan Campbell’s tenure, but on Thursday night they were even more aggressive than usual in those situations.

Not all of Campbell’s ventures have paid off, but the biggest has. Running back David Mongomery picked up seven yards on a four-and-inch from the Packers’ 21-yard line with 43 seconds left in a 31-31 game, and the Lions won with a Jake Bates field goal on the final whistle.

It was the fourth conversion in five attempts Thursday night, making them the second team in the last 45 years to score inside the opponent’s 25 on fourth down in a tied game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Campbell said after the game that he “just felt like we had to finish it on offense” and praised Montgomery, the offensive line and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson for getting it done.

The Lions’ defense has been ravaged by injuries, something quarterback Jared Goff was referring to when he said Campbell told the team during the week that the offense would carry a greater load.

“We went into this game knowing we could do it a little more than usual” Goff said via the team’s website. “Dan mentioned this earlier in the week. He really wanted to rely on our offense to make some impact and be aggressive in the fourth period when the opportunity presented itself.”

The only failed conversion came on the Lions’ own 31-yard line and resulted in a Packers touchdown, but the reward was ultimately worth the risk for the Lions.
