Missing Hawaii woman Hannah Kobayashi may have been involved in a green card marriage scam before her disappearance — and the FBI is involved in the case. Los Angeles Magazine has revealed.

Kobayashi was reported missing in Los Angeles on November 11, three days after she left her home in Maui to travel to New York via LA. That sparked a weeks-long search that ended when police said Tuesday that she had actually crossed the border into New York and Mexico on Nov. 12.

But Los Angeles Magazine revealed that Kobayahi’s mother found evidence that she may have been involved in a fake green card marriage and was cheated out of the proceeds by her own ex-boyfriend before she disappeared.

Her mother, Brandi Yee, turned over documents to the FBI, the magazine reported. The agency declined to comment.

The magazine said that Kobayashi was accompanied on the flight to LA by three people: an Argentinian named Alan Cacace; his girlfriend, known only as Marianne; and Kobayashi’s unnamed former friend.

The ex-boyfriend linked up with New York while Kobayashi stayed in Los Angeles.

But according to Cacace Los Angeles MagazineShe married Kobayashi in a fake ceremony to get him a green card, while her ex-boyfriend apparently arranged for it and then cheated her out of paying for it. Documents uncovered by Kobayashi’s mother, Brandi Yee, show that Kobayashi worked with an immigration attorney whom Yee attempted to contact.

“This lawyer has been uncooperative with the mother,” a source said.

After news of the possible visa fraud broke, the Kobayashi family’s lawyer came forward went to X to deal with the allegations.

“We would like to emphasize that the family did not publicly disclose any information about an alleged marriage because we did not have the facts or the necessary documents to verify the legitimacy of this information,” said lawyer Sara Azari.

She added that Yee “handed over the alleged information to law enforcement immediately upon receipt.”

Before cutting off contact with friends and family, Kobayashi sent a series of cryptic messages, some of which may have alluded to the alleged cheating.

“I was pretty much tricked into giving away all my money. From someone I thought I loved,” she texted a friend on November 11th.

On Tuesday, the LAPD classified Kobayashi as a “voluntary missing person” after uncovered surveillance footage showed her crossing the border into Mexico “unharmed.”

The discovery came a week after Kobayashi’s father, Ryan, died by suicide while searching for Kobayashi at Los Angeles International Airport.

The Kobayashi family said in a statement to NBC News that they would continue to search for her.

“Our family remains hopeful that Hannah is safe and encourages everyone to continue the search,” the statement said. “The search is far from over and we are committed to doing everything we can to bring her home safely.”
