“Risk of heavy snowfall”: Two more snowfalls could hit Colorado in the coming days

It’s official – there are two more snow chances on the radar for Colorado, potentially ending a dry start to the month after impressive snowfalls in November.

Maps from the National Weather Service suggest multiple snowfalls could occur in the coming days.

The first map looks at the period from December 9th to 10th and shows a chance of precipitation in the southern Colorado and central mountains area.

Further insights provided by OpenSnow suggest this could mean an accumulation of around 2.5 to 12 centimeters in some central mountain resorts. However, another map suggests a larger storm could follow.

Experimental longer-range mapping from the National Weather Service suggests there is a risk of heavy snowfall in the northwestern corner of the state between December 12 and December 16.

While this snowfall is still a week away and much can change, the “Danger of Heavy Snow” message on this map product provided by the NWS generally applies to the extent that there is at least some snow during a given period . The snow also tends to extend beyond the area expected to see heavier snow.

Colorado’s snowpack was at about 137 percent of previous normal following a severe storm in the last week of November. This value has fallen to 118 percent since December 5th. One important change is that northern Colorado’s river basins have fallen below normal for this time of year, with the Laramie and North Platte river basins currently at 89 percent of normal, while the Yampa-White-Little Snake River Basin (home of Steamboat Springs) is 93 percent.
