Packers QB Jordan Love makes insane throw in loss to Lions

Don’t let one of the craziest throws of Jordan Love’s NFL career go to waste in Thursday night’s disappointing 34-31 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

The throw did not result in a touchdown and was a pure completion to Christian Watson in the penalty area for 29 yards. But when you watch the game, you have to understand the difficulty and awesomeness of the entire Green Bay Packers quarterback sequence.

The situation: 2nd-and-14 from the Green Bay 26-yard line with 7:57 left in the fourth quarter, the Packers trailing 31-28.

Here is the video from the end zone perspective:

The Lions blitzed linebacker Jack Campbell through the A gap, and Campbell cleanly beat running back Josh Jacobs and had a free run at Love in the pocket. In danger of a bone-crushing sack at a big point, Love stepped left and ducked under Campbell with his right shoulder to momentarily avoid the pressure and buy himself a second. Instead of trying to escape the pocket and run, Love got back to his feet and somehow delivered a perfectly timed and accurate throw to Watson despite being hit or pressured from both the front and back. And it wasn’t an easy throw – first-round pick Terrion Arnold ran step-for-step with Watson in single coverage, and the window the throw fit into was perhaps the size of a cereal box. But Love managed to get past the outstretched arms and Arnold, giving Watson the chance to make a big play that ultimately led to the 31-1 tie.

Had Love been sacked, the game might have been over. The Packers would have faced third-and-forever and likely kicked the ball back to the Lions with about seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. And it wouldn’t have been too surprising if Campbell – a first-round linebacker – had tackled Love and thrown him to the ground to sack him, as he would have gotten to the quarterback on the blitz.

Instead, Love’s evasive maneuvers and incredible finishing under pressure turned a negative play into an explosive gain, and the Packers scored 1st-and-10 from the Lions’ 45th.

It’s easy to forget this play considering it was a no-score play and the Packers ultimately lost the game. But it should be remembered. In fact, given the situation and the difficulty of the piece as a whole, one could argue that it is now one of the very best pieces of Love’s career to date.

Despite a slow start, Love ended up completing 12 of 20 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 10.3 yards per attempt, had no turnovers and finished with a passer rating of 111.7 and a season-high QBR of 92.4.
