The chimes that begin Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” are instantly recognizable. Over the years, the song has established itself as a staple of the Christmas season.

But what is the appeal of Christmas music?

“Christmas music this time of year helps many of us get in the mood for the season,” said Emily Sung, assistant professor at the Thornton School of Music. “Some music that really connects with the sounds of the holiday can make people feel like it’s time to celebrate.”

On campus, students are already feeling the holiday spirit as they prepare for a busy finals week. Some also feel nostalgic when listening to their favorite Christmas songs brings back memories of past holidays.

“My favorite Christmas song is ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ because it’s like a classic,” said Colby Kurasaki, a freshman business administration major. “I grew up with the piano and that was the first Christmas song I learned to play.”

For other students, the holiday season is a romantic time.

“I just feel like when it’s cold outside…I feel really in love, like in a romantic mood,” said screenwriting major Alexandra Kirchner, whose holiday favorites include “Last Christmas” by Wham!

And of course the students didn’t leave the unofficial Christmas queen out of the conversation.

“I know some people have said it’s a bit exaggerated, but I have to second Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas is you,'” said Tripp Carrington, an English major. “I love this song. Every time it starts I get a little excited.”
