Amon-Ra St. Brown: We knew the entire game that Dan Campbell was going to give it his all on fourth-and-short

Fourth downs were the biggest difference in the Lions’ win over the Packers on Thursday night: Detroit tried five times and converted four of them, while the Packers kicked on every fourth down. Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown says coach Dan Campbell told him to be ready on offense.

St. Brown said Campbell made it clear while preparing for the Packers that the offense should plan to stay on the field on fourth-and-short, although even St. Brown wasn’t sure if Campbell would try it on the final fourth-and-short play would. and-1 as the Lions set up their game-winning field goal as time expired.

“We knew the whole game that if it was a close fourth, we would go for it. Last time I didn’t know if we were going to do it or not, but he said we were going to stay in it,” St. Brown said.

St. Brown supported Campbell’s decision to go for a final first down to reduce the time remaining so the Lions could kick the game-winning field goal as time expired, rather than kicking the field goal and giving the Packers about 35 seconds to do so score yourself.

“If you kick the ball and go three there, it gives them some time to come back and win,” St. Brown said.

Campbell made the bold but right call. That’s what he’s been doing since he became the Lions’ coach, and it’s one of the reasons he’s taken the Lions from losers to winners.
