Wirtz stars as Leverkusen beats Red Bull Salzburg

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen beat Red Bull Salzburg and secured their third Champions League win of the season.

Florian Wirtz gave the home team an early lead from the penalty spot after the ball hit Samson Baidoo on the elbow in the penalty area.

Just three minutes later it was 2-0 when Alejandro Grimaldo fired a great free kick over the wall and into the net after a foul by Lucas Gourna-Douath on Wirtz.

The game was all but over after half an hour when Wirtz combined well with Grimaldo and then fired a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

Czech international Patrik Schick was active in the 61st minute and converted a great shot from close range by Jeremie Frimpong.

And substitute Aleix Garcia completed the scoring four minutes after coming on, scoring from the edge of the penalty area for his first Champions League goal.

This was Leverkusen’s joint-biggest win in a major European competition, equaling UEFA Cup victories over Budapest Honved in November 1994 and Zurich in December 2007.

This catapults Xabi Alonso’s side into the top eight of the league phase of the competition, while Salzburg remains in the last 12 after their fourth defeat in five games.
