Randy Moss is leaving ESPN to focus on health issues

Randy Moss is leaving ESPN due to an undisclosed health condition.

“Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss will be stepping away from ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ for an extended period of time to focus on a personal health challenge,” ESPN reporter Adam Schefter posted on social media Friday.

The broadcaster said Moss “briefly addressed” the matter at the start of Sunday’s broadcast.

The 47-year-old wide receiver said he was battling “something internal” without revealing much more information other than that viewers noticed yellowing in his eyes. Moss concluded his statement by urging everyone to “get checked and get blood tests.”

He is expected to return to ESPN at some point in the future.

“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, pushing ‘Countdown’ forward with his insight and passion,” the network said. “He has ESPN’s full support and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready.”

Moss broke into professional football in 1998 when he scored 17 touchdowns en route to being named Offensive Rookie of the Year. He was selected to the Pro Bowl six times and played for five teams before retiring in 2012.

Moss still holds the NFL record for touchdown receptions in a single season. In 2007, he caught 23 passes while playing for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
