Longhorns secure No. 1 recruiting class in country

For the first time in football’s modern recruiting era, the Texas Longhorns Hold the No. 1 class in the country after the signing period closes.

After beating out Georgia and Auburn for the Five-Star Plus+ defensive lineman Jupiter TerryTexas has taken the top spot in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. And as things stand today, neither is expected to make any further commitments before the end of the period on Friday.

In total, the Longhorns have 25 commitments, 18 of which are blue chip (four and five star) candidates. Four of them are five-star prospects and are among the top 32 prospects in the country. Terry (No. 9) and five-star plus+ safety Jonah Williams (No. 11) lead the way. They are flanked by EDGE Lance Jackson (#25) and WR Kaliq Lockett (#30).

Texas also has two borderline five-star players under contract in cornerback Kade Phillips (No. 34) and WR Jaime Ffrench (No. 35). The country’s top athlete, Michael Terry III, rounds out the class’s list of six top-50 signees, coming in at No. 44 overall.

Sixty-three percent of Texas signees are from the Lone Star State, a slight increase from the class of 2024, when 59 percent came from the Interior.

The course is Steve Sarkisian’s fourth full course since taking office in Austin. And each finished in the top six nationally, with a top-three finish in 2023 being the highest so far. Texas has finished as high as No. 2 several times in recent years, but if they can hold on until the end of the cycle in February, it will be their first No. 1 finish in more than two decades.

Other notable additions for the Longhorns this cycle

In addition to the six prospects ranked in the top 50, the Longhorns have signed four others ranked in the top 100 in the country.

Four-star linebacker Elijah Barnes (No. 56) was among the earlier commitments in the class, joining on April 12. Four-star linebacker EDGE Smith Orogbo (No. 83) committed on July 1 and is borderline five-star in the On3 rankings. Tampa (Florida) Wiregrass cornerback Graceson Littleton (No. 67) chose Texas over Michigan after decommitting from Clemson earlier this fall. And despite a late push from Florida, four-star defenseman Myron Charles (No. 96) remained at UT after committing in September.

Spring (Texas) Dekaney tight end Nick Townsend is one of the more dynamic athletes in the entire class, and wide receiver Daylan McCutcheon could be a player who sees early snaps next season after transferring from Florida State.

The Horns also signed four-star running back James Simon from Louisiana, blue-chip passer KJ Lacey from Alabama and four-stars Zelus Hicks and Nick Brooks from Georgia.

If there was any doubt that this program could recruit in SEC country, that cycle is finally put to rest.
