BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — ESPN NFL analyst Randy Moss will take an extended break from his role to address a “personal health challenge,” the network announced Friday.

Moss, 47, first shared the news of his “internal” health battle during ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown” on Dec. 1. The Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver did not provide any information about his health, but indicated that he may wear sunglasses on air because “I’m fighting something,” he said.

“Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss will be stepping away from ‘Sunday NFL Countdown’ for an extended period of time to focus on a personal health challenge,” ESPN Public Relations wrote in a post to X on Friday.

“For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, bringing Countdown forward with his insight and passion. He has ESPN’s full support and we look forward to welcoming him back when he is ready,” the network added.

Moss, who joined ESPN in 2016, also shared the news of his unspecified health issue in a video posted to his Instagram account on Sunday. The video was captioned: “Go for your checkups!!! Prayer warriors, I need you.”

“All men, you do your checkups, do your blood work and we’ll take care of it,” he said.

Moss played 14 seasons in the NFL from 1998 to 2012 for the Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers. The 1998 NFL Rookie of the Year finished his career with six Pro Bowl selections and was named First Team All-Pro four times. Moss ranks second in NFL history in receiving touchdowns (156) and fourth in receiving yards (15,292).
