Player ratings: Atalanta 2-1 AC Milan

AC Milan were unable to extend their winning streak, with Atalanta prevailing 2-1 thanks to a late goal. After a promising first half, the Rossoneri faded in the second half and below are player ratings, some of whom struggled.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check it out how we decide on player ratings. From the scale to the impact on the rating, we have put everything together there.

Starting XI

Maignan (7 – MOTM): He conceded two goals, but he couldn’t do anything about the goals and was crucial in the build-up of the game for Milan. Without his consolation in possession, Atalanta would likely have dominated proceedings as the Rossoneri would have had no time to rest. He also made several saves, including a great save from Retegui at the end.

Emerson Royal (5.5): He had a bit of trouble with his positioning in the first half as Atalanta seemed to be able to gain space easily on the right, but he improved significantly in the second half. However, he could have gotten more out of the goal even if everything had happened quickly (and perhaps the first header should have been caught instead). In the end he helped save another goal, although it would have been better to stop Lookman’s attempt.

Gabbia (6): The academy product has some good interventions and has again hit the positioning more or less exactly. He was able to win the ball back as well as fend off block attempts, it was a shame for the defenders that the two goals came from set pieces.

Thiaw (6): Just like his colleague, it was another very solid performance and considering how lethal Atalanta were in attack, conceding a goal from set pieces is a good mark for the centre-backs. Thiaw in particular was strong in tackles and also had some good passes forward.

Hernandez (5): That may sound very harsh considering it was a good pass from Leao on goal, but as captain of the team he still has to do a lot more. He was often beaten by Bellanova, especially when Atalanta played a one-two, showing a lack of concentration, and his passing in attack left a lot to be desired. Whatever form he had, he simply doesn’t have it anymore.

Fofana (6.5): In the end he seemed to be the only one trying to press and to be honest he was very unlucky in that regard as he almost won the ball back in dangerous positions on several occasions. He also looked good on the ball and when dropping down.

Reijnders (5.5): It had to happen, but this was a visible decline for the Dutchman. The passing game just wasn’t there, especially the combinations that almost always failed, and he didn’t add the x-factor in midfield that Milan so desperately needed tonight.

Musah (5.5): He was responsible for an incredibly stupid foul that led to Atalanta’s first goal, which is a shame as he was fine overall. In fact, he had some good runs forward and that helped, even if the final pass was often missing. Still, it was an obvious and fatal mistake.

Pulisic (N/A): He had a good chance in the first 15 seconds, but the goalkeeper parried the shot. Maybe he could have done better, but the finish wasn’t bad per se. He was taken off the pitch after around 35 minutes due to injury, so no rating here.

Leao (6): This run and this cross goes to Morata, who also tried to make a big difference in the first half. However, he faded almost completely in the second half and simply stopped running on most passes, which is something you never want to see. Granted that he didn’t have much to do, he wasn’t particularly successful when he had the ball – apart from scoring of course.

Morata (6): The right place, the right time at the gate and some good combinations overall. However, similar to Leao, the second half was a strain for him and one feels that he should have asked Milan in particular to pick up the tempo.

Substitute

Loftus Cheek (6): The Englishman had some good forays forward and was good defensively too, but it wasn’t spectacular from him tonight.

Abraham (N/A): We haven’t seen enough to give it a rating.

Chukwueze (N/A): We haven’t seen enough to give it a rating.
