Weather forecast for the weekend in Central NY: Another inch or two of snow before the rain begins

Syracuse, NY – Get out and enjoy the snow on Friday and Saturday because it will begin melting on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow flurries will continue across much of central New York on Friday and Saturday, although only about an inch or less is expected each day. The winter storm warning for much of the region has been lifted.

However, parts of Oswego County could still see up to 2 feet of snow by midday Saturday, according to the weather service.

According to the National Weather Service, areas east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will continue to experience lake-effect snow from Friday, December 6, through Saturday, December 6, 2024.National Weather Service

Many schools had a two-hour delay this morning.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Oswego, Lewis and Jefferson counties and the northern part of Oneida County.

Winds are expected to increase again Friday evening in those areas and parts of Onondaga and Madison counties north of the Thruway, according to the service’s forecast.

This will result in intense lake effect snow bands across portions of these northern communities, particularly northern Oneida Counties. According to the weather service, it could snow there at times on Saturday up to 2.5 centimeters per hour.

Closer to Syracuse and the rest of Central New York, lake effect snow is expected to taper off by midday today as wind speeds ease.

Another centimeter of snow could fall tonight, then again on Saturday. Low temperatures on Friday and Saturday evening will be in the low 20s.

But temperatures will rise on Sunday. Then the rain will start, according to the forecast for this morning.

Sunday could see temperatures in the low 40s, with a low above freezing tonight.

Rain is then expected on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
