Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is back on NBC!

In honor of the Christmas movie’s 60th anniversary, NBC will air a special extended version of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” this holiday season.

The film premiered on NBC in 1964, but has not been broadcast on the network since 1972, when it moved to a different home. Now, the Christmas movie returns to NBC for the first time in more than 50 years, airing December 6 at 8 p.m. ET.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” tells the story of a doe-eyed, red-nosed reindeer who learns to love what makes him different from the other reindeer while helping Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

One of the most iconic lines from the stop-motion film is when Santa turns to Rudolph and says, “Rudolph, with your bright nose, won’t you drive my sleigh tonight?”

The story of Rudolph is based on a story by Robert L. May in the 1930s and gained greater popularity when Johnny Marks wrote a song about it in the 1940s.

NBC released its TV special in 1964, which featured more supporting characters and a detailed plot.

“We had no idea we would still be seeing this 60 years later,” says actress Corinne Conley, who voiced Rudolph’s mother.

Conley added: “It’s nice to have been involved in something that touches people so much.”

The film is still widely celebrated today. For example, the Gaylord Texan Resort near Dallas, Texas, is displaying ice sculptures of the film’s characters this year.

A 7-year-old fan at the resort told Fryer, “I love Rudolph because he’s a cute reindeer and his nose lights up.”
