Over 35,000 participants are expected at the 2024 Honolulu Marathon

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Over 35,000 participants are expected to take to the streets this weekend for the 52nd Honolulu Marathon.

Organizers said registration numbers were up 25% compared to last year and this weekend would be a record year with the highest number of participants ever.

The first race of the weekend is the Kalakaua Merrie Mile, which starts at 7 a.m. Saturday. It’s a one-mile race in Waikiki, followed by a beach party.

The 26.2-mile course begins at 5 a.m. Sunday on Ala Moana Boulevard with a fireworks display.

At the same time, the participants of the “Start to Park 10k” will also be starting.

Online registration for 2024 is now closed; However, you can still register in person for any of the three race distances at the Honolulu Marathon Expo.

The expo began at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hawaii Convention Center and is open until 6 p.m

Marathon officials said no one else could pick up the bib for you, nor could they do so on race day.

Participants should have received an email with their race number this week and must bring it with them when they come to the convention center.

Here are the full opening hours of the fair:

  • Thursday, December 5th: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m
  • Friday, December 6th: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m
  • Saturday, December 7th: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m
Road closures will be in effect

From 00:30 a.m. one or more lanes will be closed and/or cordoned off until the athletes have completed this section of the route.

Tow zones are in effect from midnight to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The route goes through downtown Honolulu, past the Iolani Palace and Christmas lights, through Waikiki and uphill and around Diamond Head before heading through Kahala to Hawaii Kai. After Hawaii Kai, the course returns toward Kahala and Honolulu, passing Diamond Head on the ocean side again before ending at Kapiolani Park.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and prepare for traffic diversions.

Some bus routes will be canceled and/or rerouted. Bus riders can call TheBUS at 808-848-5555 or visit the Oahu Transit Services website for more information
