Last year, players were fined for gestures, most notably perhaps Rudy Gobert when he appeared to suggest that the referees had money for a game. That cost him $100,000.

Brown had 28 points with nine assists and Kristaps Porzingis added 26 points and nine rebounds, leading the Celtics to their ninth win in 10 games.

The Celtics held a double-digit lead until the fourth quarter, when Detroit made four straight three-pointers to get within eight points (109-101), forcing Boston coach Joe Mazzulla to reinstate Brown.
