4 takeaways as the Celtics beat the Bucks to win the season series

BOSTON – The Celtics and Bucks turned up the pressure and intensity for a regular season game, and again the C’s walked away with the win. This time it was a 111-105 win at TD Garden on Friday as the Celtics swept the Bucks in the season series.

With the win, Boston improved to 19-4 while Milwaukee fell to 11-11. The physicality was present throughout Friday’s game as bodies hit the floor and fouls occurred with a little more oomph. There were 14 lead changes as the teams struggled to keep the fight as the referees let them play through the physicality.

The Celtics led in the first half thanks to a great start from Jaylen Brown. But the Bucks stayed close and made their 3-point shots. The Celtics took a 12-0 lead behind the arc in the second quarter, allowing the Bucks to take a slim lead into halftime. It was the first time this season that the C’s didn’t make at least one 3-pointer in a quarter.

From then on, it remained a close game in the second half as neither team managed to reach any distance. That set the stage for a physical finish on Friday. It had the intensity of a playoff game as neither team backed down and let the other have the physical advantage. Ultimately, it was the C’s who emerged victorious in the clutch game.

Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Brown added another 25 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 30 points and 11 rebounds, while Damian Lillard had 31 points and five rebounds. The C’s were without Kristaps Porzingis as they saved him for the second straight game.

The Celtics end a busy stretch when they take on Marcus Smart and the Grizzlies at the Garden on Saturday at 8 p.m. Here are four takeaways from Boston’s win over Milwaukee:

Stars showed up: While the Celtics have sat deep and relied on their depth, their best players have performed consistently. Brown and Tatum combined for 59 points. On the other hand, the Bucks got a combined 61 points from Antetokounmpo and Lillard. Milwaukee also had Khris Middleton in his season debut on Friday, scoring 11 points off the bench due to a minutes restriction. While other key performers were present on Friday, the best players showed up.

Back and forth: Brown and Antetokounmpo have had a bit of history since they last met, and there was at least a little friction on Friday. Brown called the Bucks star a “kid” after the C’s beat the Bucks in Milwaukee last month. The Bucks star hit Brown with a fake handshake, which led to Brown’s comments. This time, Brown received a technical foul after tackling Antetokounmpo as he entered the court. Brown had just scored on Antetokounmpo, giving him the “too small” gesture, which also resulted in Antetokounmpo giving Brown a small elbow on the Celtics star’s way up. The antics weren’t over the top, but Friday’s game had a little more pizzazz.

Heating up: Sam Hauser had a slow start to the season, due in part to some back problems he struggled with throughout training camp. But he’s started to find his groove shooting the ball; that was the case again on Friday. Hauser finished the game with 16 points off the bench and shot 4 of 8 on 3-pointers. Hauser entered Friday’s game shooting 36.4% with three goals on the season as he has gotten stronger in recent games.

Final meeting: Due to scheduling reasons, the Celtics and Bucks will not meet again in the 2024-25 regular season after three games in three months. They defeated the Bucks at home on October 28th and away on November 10th, meaning they have already won the season series regardless of Friday’s game. The Bucks have struggled to get out of the game this season, so they may not matter as a direct tiebreaker in the standings. But that’s a kink when it comes to the two eastern rivals.
