Trae Young secures the 134:132 overtime win against the Lakers

The Hawks were firing on all cylinders and looked to extend their winning streak to six with a home win against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jalen Johnson came into this game shooting 45 percent from three in his last five games and started this game with a made three-pointer. Additionally, De’Andre Hunter practiced his first three attempts entering the game. For the 21-year-old, Snyder substituted Vit Krejci and Bogdan Bogdanovic and caused some excitement.

Kobe Bufkin was healthy but did not play in the first quarter as Vit Krejci took over his minutes. The Lakers led 29-26 after one game, and Johnson led by seven points. Krejci also started in the second quarter. Johnson assisted Okongwu on several made field goals. Bogdanovic made two three-pointers, but the Lakers had an answer every time the Hawks scored.

LeBron was dominant, scoring 11 points in the first seven minutes of the quarter for a total of 17 points. He and Anthony Davis combined for 39 while both teams were tied at 64 at the start of the half.

At the start of the second half, Johnson committed two quick fouls that put the Hawks in trouble. The Lakers went on a 13-2 run and extended their lead to 11 points. The Hawks pushed back thanks to consecutive three-pointers from De’Andre Hunter. Trae Young continued to have a fantastic quarter, highlighted by a steal and a high three-pointer.

Young finished the quarter with 15 points and Hunter added eight. The Hawks trailed 97-94 early in the fourth period, but got much better production from their bench than the Lakers.

Bogdan Bogdanovic gave the Hawks a one-possession lead with his third triple of the night. Bogdanovic would then go fourth, and no one had more faith in him than Trae Young.

In a unique series of events, De’Andre Hunter committed three fouls on the same possession to give the Hawks the bonus with more than three minutes left. In a close game, Dyson Daniels hit a three-pointer, forced a turnover and then hit a floater to take a 116-115 lead.

Later, Hunter made a three-pointer to make it two, then LeBron tied it at the other end. With the score tied at 119-119, the Hawks had 12.9 seconds left and had the ball with a chance to win the game. Young’s three-point attempt was blocked and the game went into overtime.

The Hawks immediately jumped to a four-point lead in overtime. Then Max Christie fouls for the Lakers and Onyeka Okongwu fouls for the Hawks. With 36.9 seconds left, Johnson hit two free throws to cut the Lakers’ lead to one point. Daniels then secured a steal, but was blocked on the other side. With about twenty seconds left, the Hawks secured possession of a jump ball and maintained possession while trailing one. Trae Young would hit a game-winning three-pointer.
