Hawks 134-132 Lakers (December 6, 2024) Game Recap

ATLANTA – Trae Young hit a 3-pointer with 7.4 seconds left in overtime and the Atlanta Hawks secured their sixth straight win, beating the struggling Los Angeles Lakers 134-132 on Friday.

Young scored 31 points, offsetting a strong night against the Lakers’ Big Two. LeBron James scored 39 points and Anthony Davis 38, but it wasn’t enough to save Los Angeles from its third straight loss and seventh loss in nine games.

James had a chance to win the ball for the Lakers, but his long three-pointer landed clattering at the rim.

With the score at 119, the Hawks had their last regulation possession. Young’s 3-pointer was blocked by Max Christie and James collided with Davis, who was attempting to attack the loose ball, causing the 39-year-old to kneel in pain.

After limping to the bench, James was back on the pitch for overtime.

Takeaways

Lakers: James & Co. could at least find solace in being competitive. They had lost their previous two games by a combined 70 points – the worst consecutive result in franchise history.

Hawks: Atlanta is on the rise, posting its longest winning streak in seven games from January 17-30, 2022.

Key moment

Dyson Daniels made two great defensive plays for the Hawks in the final minute of overtime. A steal didn’t score any points – James made a big block – but Daniels then tied up Davis for a jump ball. Davis won the tip, but James threw the ball out of bounds while battling with De’Andre Hunter. That set up Young’s winning goal.

Important statistics

Led by Hunter with 26 points and Bogdan Bogdanovic with 20 points, Atlanta’s reserve players outscored their Lakers colleagues 65:17.
