El Paso residents express mixed reactions as a TikTok ban is threatened due to national security concerns

With TikTok, arguably the world’s most popular social media app, potentially banned in the United States, El Pasoans say the government should address other, more pressing issues.

The US Court of Appeals recently rejected TikTok’s request to overturn a law requiring the app to cut ties with its China-based parent company ByteDance.

The law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, follows national security concerns over TikTok’s ties to China and its access to vast amounts of user data.

TikTok and ByteDance are expected to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court, but it remains uncertain whether the court will hear the case.

If TikTok ultimately fails to comply, it could be banned from the US by mid-January.

KFOX14/CBS4 spoke with some El Paso residents who said they had mixed feelings about the potential ban.

One resident said: “I always find it sad when we restrict freedom of expression. But I think our teenagers will probably do better, so I think there is a silver lining.”

Another El Paso resident expressed skepticism about the focus on TikTok, saying, “I think there are much more important things to worry about for our country than banning social media.”

The resident added: “I’m all for making things safer and stuff, but I think we need to focus a lot more on what’s happening around the world, particularly for low-income families and things like that that are affected by the new elections would be.”

What do you think? Should TikTok be banned? Is it an infringement on your freedoms? Do you think your data and that of millions of Americans is at risk?
