4 keys for the Illinois basketball team to beat Northwestern

Illinois did a lot of things right this season. We are a talented team from top to bottom, but I think one of the most insidious things about this program is the fact that we are constantly running.

It’s rare for the Illini to get into a half-court offense and rock the ball. We’re up and down the field trying to manage the transition and that worked perfectly in almost every game.

This season, Illinois is averaging 75.8 possessions per game, which ranks 27th in the country. On the other end of the spectrum, Northwestern averages 68.6 possessions per game, ranking 293rd nationally.

I think if Illinois just plays their game, it won’t be much of a contest. Illinois can outrun Northwestern because of the variety of scoring options it has out of the gym.

On the previous slide I mentioned Tomislav Ivisic. He can play in the post with incredible touch, but can also get out and shoot a three-point shot. Ivisic can run the court better than most big men I’ve ever seen. He will be a nightmare in transition.

Kasparas Jakucionis is also a threat in transition. With his court vision, handles and great shooting, Northwestern won’t be able to overtake him.

Northwestern is a slow-moving team that can’t keep up. Illinois just can’t play the Wildcats’ style, and we should be fine.
