How Boise State’s win over UNLV impacts the college football playoff round

Boise State is officially the first team to actually secure a spot in the 12-team first round of the College Football Playoff.

Behind 209 rushing yards from Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty, the Broncos defeated UNLV 21-7 on Friday night at Albertsons Stadium to clinch the 2024 Mountain West championship and an automatic berth in the tournament as one of the five highest-seeded conference champions.

“This means everything,” Jeanty said on the ESPN broadcast after the game. “…It’s a dream come true. I love this team.”

Boise State sits at No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday and, as one of the four top-ranked teams in the five auto contenders, is now likely to secure a first-round bye to the quarterfinals. That’s not guaranteed, however, and the winner of Saturday’s Big 12 Championship between No. 15 Arizona State and No. 16 Iowa State likely poses the biggest threat to knock the Broncos out of the top four spots.

The other three first-round bye spots will likely be won by the winners of Saturday’s three conference championship games in the Big Ten (No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 3 Penn State), the SEC (No. 2 Texas vs. No. 5 Georgia) and the ACC (No. 8 SMU vs. No. 17 Clemson).

The official round of the College Football Playoff will be announced Sunday at noon ET on ESPN.
