The Yankees’ two-time All-Star could cut ties with New York and join the Royals

The Kansas City Royals have already made a new addition to their team after reaching the postseason in 2024. They added Jonathan India from the Cincinnati Reds. They could look to sign a New York Yankees All-Star to solidify their bullpen.

While Jim Bowden of The Athletic listed free agency as a fit for any team, he noted that the Royals may be suited to sign Clay Holmes to a two-year, $18.5 million deal.

Holmes eventually lost his role as a closer for the Yankees, but the Royals may not want him at that position anyway. He looked good in leverage positions and could serve as a setup man. The Royals want to build on their postseason appearance in 2024 and Holmes could be a valuable addition.

“Holmes lost the closer position with the Yankees last season — he had 13 blown saves in 40 save opportunities — but he was effective in high-leverage moments as a set-up reliever, which looks like his best role,” wrote Bowden. “In his age-31 season this year, he posted a 3.14 ERA in 67 appearances. It would make sense to use Holmes as a replacement for Lucas Erceg or possibly share the closer role with him.”

Holmes was an All-Star in 2024. Before the All-Star Break, he had a 2.77 ERA and 21 saves for the Yankees. If the Royals want to make a deep run in the postseason, Holmes could bring valuable experience. In 19 postseason games, he has a 1.35 ERA and 12 strikeouts.
