Hundreds of people filled Howard University’s Burr Gymnasium to attend a news conference by two hometown boxers.

WASHINGTON – D.C. native boxer Lamont Roach will face Baltimore’s Gervonta “Tank” Davis next year. The two grew up studying in the DMV and say it was a no-brainer to promote it to their family and friends at Howard University on March 1, 2025.

“This is just a token of my appreciation to them,” Roach said.

His father proudly carried his WBA super featherweight title belt to Burr Gymnasium and remembered the place where it all began.

“I grew up not far from here, in the north of the city, in the northwest,” he said, “it’s a dream come true.”

He couldn’t be prouder.

“My son is a class act. He did it right,” Roach Sr. explained. “He worked hard to get to the position he’s in right now. I’m so proud of him, words can’t describe it.”

Roach will challenge Davis for the WBA lightweight title on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, attempting to win a championship in two different weight classes.

“This is what we have worked for since he was a child, to work our way to the top,” his father explained.

But her focus goes beyond the ring. The father-son duo is determined to give back to the next generation.

“We give back, we lead by example, we are role models and we wear many different hats,” he explained. “My son also takes on this role.”

It’s a responsibility he takes seriously.

“Without someone to guide me, I wouldn’t be here,” Roach explained. “I want to make sure that someone who is younger than me or can be influenced by me gets the same guidance.”
