Why was this AMC customer kicked out of “Wicked”?

A disgruntled AMC customer has gone viral on TikTok after being kicked out of his seats to accommodate other guests. In the 8-minute video, which garnered 64,700 views, Tyler (@gaywithopinions) explained how a birthday trip went completely wrong.

“I would love for this to go viral so hopefully someone will at least try to fix some of this,” he began. He then explained how he and his friends had booked tickets to see “Wicked” at the AMC New City 14 in Chicago weeks in advance. Tyler said the group showed up early and sat in the right seats.

Then, “as Nicole Kidman appeared on the screen,” Tyler said, a theater employee asked if he could see her tickets. Tyler also noticed a group of six people standing off to the side. The worker claimed that a mix-up occurred after a canceled screening of “Wicked” at Theater 12 was merged with the screening of Tyler at Theater 10.

Even though their tickets were valid, Tyler claims the worker asked them to vacate their seats to accommodate late arrivals from Theater 12. The TikToker also claimed that although they were offered front row seats, they were not together and a friend was forced to sit in the front seat due to motion sickness.

@gaywithopinions Hiiii @AMC Theaters, what happened today was…not cute? I hope you can improve this situation for us. @Wicked Movie, we were so excited to see the movie today, we’ve been looking forward to it since the day it was announced. We’re sad we didn’t get a chance to see it 😭😭😭 #amc #amctheaters #amcalist #amcstubs #wickedmovie #wicked ♬ Original sound – Tyler

What happened next?

Afterwards, Tyler said that due to Apple Pay difficulties, they were refunded tickets via gift card and offered two movie vouchers – but he says that’s not enough, especially because as an A-List member, he can already see three shows a week for free.

He claims there were no other show times available and the employee recommended another theater. “By kicking us out, he essentially took away our opportunity to see the film,” he said.

Later, Tyler says, he called the company, who advised him to tag AMC A-List on social media to see if they could help. “Has anyone experienced something like this?” he asked. “It just felt so scary and bizarre to be literally run out of the theater on my friend’s birthday.”

Tyler did not immediately respond to the Daily Dot’s request for comment via TikTok comments.

Numerous commenters shared similar complaints with AMC, and several noted that “exactly” this situation happened to them.

“This exact situation happened to me in this EXACT theater,” wrote one. “They had changed the hall and booked the seats twice – this is NOT a one-off problem!”

Others shared their broader issues at AMC.

“We had a terrible experience yesterday at the same AMC where we bought tickets for the 3:30pm show,” one added. “And when we get there they announce that there is actually no show at 3:30pm!!”

Another commenter shared: “I booked on AMC and bought mean girl collectibles. When I got to the theater they just tried to give me regular, uncanned popcorn and hoped I wouldn’t notice.”

Apparently, this isn’t the first time AMC has misled moviegoers. Back in March, the cinema chain sparked controversy after a TikTok of it using a streaming service to play a movie went viral. “I always mess things up, man,” B Free, who posted the TikTok, says in the clip.

AMC did not immediately respond to the Daily Dot’s emailed request for comment.
