Princess Kate shares a rare moment of reflection about her cancer treatment

Catherine, Princess of Wales, reflected on her cancer journey this year at a royal event just months after completing chemotherapy.

Kate hosted the fourth annual Together at Christmas service at Westminster Abbey on Friday. She was joined by her husband, William, Prince of Wales, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

British broadcaster Channel 5 News shared a clip from the event on X, in which Kate speaks to singer Paloma Faith about her challenging year.

“I didn’t know this year was going to be the year I just had,” Kate said after Faith asked how she was doing.

“The unplanned,” Faith offered.

Kate agreed, nodded her head and replied, “The unplanned. Exactly.”

“But I think a lot of people have had such challenging times this year,” Kate added.

It’s a rare glimpse into Kate’s life and her journey against cancer.

Kate shared the diagnosis in a video message in March and said she would undergo “preventative chemotherapy.” She also said the cancer was discovered during major abdominal surgery in January.

What type of cancer Kate had or what abdominal surgery she had months earlier was not revealed.

In September, Kate said she had completed chemotherapy and would return to a light schedule of public appearances through the end of the year.

Kate had largely stayed out of the public eye during her treatment, but state events and other ceremonies that members of the royal family usually attend did not stop during this time.

Last month, Prince William said the last year had been “brutal” and added that “it was probably the hardest year of my life,” referring to both Kate’s cancer diagnosis and that of his father, King Charles III.
