Kevin O’Connell discusses Daniel Jones’ fit with Sam Darnold, Vikings

Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell is adding departed franchise quarterbacks to his roster avenger Infinity stones.

Sam Darnold, the former No. 3 pick who hasn’t proven to be an answer under center for the New York Jets, has led the Vikings to a 9-2 record this season. And now they’re joined by Daniel Jones, the former No. 6 pick who was cut by the New York Giants last Monday when he agreed to sign the Vikings after officially clearing waivers on Monday.

“Good addition to our quarterback room. I love our quarterback room already,” O’Connell said to the media on Wednesday. “I’ve always been a fan (of Jones). I really like the person, the person, the makeup. And then the player Daniel Jones, I think he has so much ahead of him that will be really good things that we get to be a part of personally.

Jones has an intriguing midseason addition to Minnesota. Currently on the practice squad, Jones will serve as Darnold’s defensive lineman and assist Nick Mullens as he learns the Vikings’ offensive system. But there could be a fit beyond this season. If Darnold continues to play at his current level, he will likely seek a larger free agent contract than the Vikings are willing to pay with first-round pick JJ McCarthy in the wings.

Setting up a position battle between McCarthy and a former New York franchise quarterback worked out with Darnold this year. With McCarthy and Jones, it could make sense next season, although O’Connell hasn’t speculated much about that possibility.

“I don’t think we need to think about it at this point,” O’Connell said when asked about the Vikings’ big plans for Jones. “I’m just happy to get him here. I think there are short-term and long-term discussions at every position on our roster.”

After three years with the Jets, in which he threw almost as many interceptions (39) as touchdowns (45), Darnold ended up with the Carolina Panthers, where he lost the starting job to Baker Mayfield in 1922. Darnold spent last season as Brock Purdy’s backup with the San Francisco 49ers before becoming a free agent looking for a one-year deal to prove he is worthy of being one of 32 NFL starting quarterbacks.

Darnold, who is currently on pace to set career highs in nearly every category, has found what he was looking for with the Vikings. And Jones appears to share a similar opinion, having chosen Minnesota over about a dozen teams that expressed interest after he cleared waivers.

“Player and quarterback development is a great passion of mine,” O’Connell said. “I just love getting opportunities to work with guys no matter what point they are at in their quarterback journey.”

“Really, our system is designed to hopefully help guys reach their true potential. It’s that simple. I think Daniel will be a positive addition to our culture and our building.”
