Bayern Munich coach Kompany confused about new Champions League

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said he didn’t fully understand how the new Champions League format worked after his team secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday to boost their chances of reaching the to improve the knockout round.

Bayern needed a first-half goal from defender Kim Min-Jae to edge past 10-man PSG and claim their third win in five games.

“I don’t look at the table because, to be honest, I don’t understand it yet,” Kompany said at a press conference. “It will look good if we win a few more games.”

Bayern climbed to 11th place with nine points from five games, one point behind the top eight places that mean automatic qualification for the round of 16. PSG is in 26th place with four games remaining, outside the playoff places with three games remaining in the first phase.

In the new 36-team league format, teams will compete against eight teams this season instead of playing against three opponents twice. They play half of these games at home and the other half away.

The top eight teams advance directly to the round of 16, while places nine to 24 compete in two playoffs to secure a place in the next round.

“It is important that we achieve our goal. If we win the remaining games, we have a chance of getting into the top eight,” said the Belgian Kompany, who is in charge of FC Bayern in his first season.

“Of course I’m happy. Our pressing in the first half was very good. The discipline was there. We probably could have scored one or two more goals, but the result is good.”

“We are on the right track, but we are working on getting even better.”
